Basic editing

When you click Edit next to a title in the Book Builder you will enter the Editor.

This editing environment shows the content of your book without its final design. To see what the final book will look like you will need to view the export preview.

Only one team member can edit at a time. All other team members will see that the item is locked and can see a preview.

Formatting tools

The toolbar across the top of the editing screen includes undo, redo, save, strong (bold), italic, inline code, hyperlink, strikethrough, underline, superscript, subscript, upper case, lower case, highlight text, transform upper/lower case, custom inline tag, insert note, ordered list, unordered list, join block, lift out of block, upload image, special character, insert code block, insert table, and table options.

Custom inline tags

Custom inline tags are toggled on and off via the plus symbol in the toolbar. To apply a custom inline tag, toggle the custom inline tags on, highlight a piece of text, and choose the relevant tag. You can add and name additional custom inline tags, but applying custom tags will only have an effect on the export of your content if the template you export with has corresponding styles or operations using them.

Special characters

Browse or search from a list of special characters including vowels and consonants with diacritics, Latin, Greek, and math. Clicking on a character in the list will insert that character in the current cursor position. In the toolbar, click the ‘æ’ button to see the list of special characters.

Find and replace

On the far right side of the toolbar is the magnifying glass icon for Find and Replace. Click to enter the text you would like to search for. You can choose to match the case entered. Click the three dots to expand to enter find and replace terms. Use the arrows to navigate through the search results. When replacing text, you can choose to replace the current instance or all instances found in the current search.

Styles and blocks

On the left side of the screen is a panel with display, text and block styles that can be applied to your content. Styles used for semantic markup give your content structure. Styles and blocks are used by the templates at export. To apply styles and blocks, select text and click on the desired style on the panel on the left side of the screen.

Semantic markup

Semantic markup is a method for using named HTML styles to structure content in order to reinforce its meaning (semantics). Non-semantic or arbitrary styles are typically applied to change how content appears visually. Editoria enforces the use of semantic markup, preventing users from applying arbitrary styles. Basic set of style blocks used for semantic markup include Title, Headings 2–6, Paragraph, Prose, Poerty, Souce Note, and Block Quote. Each numbered heading is a subheading of the previously numbered Heading. Headings must be nested. Each document should begin with a Title (H1); Heading 2 should follow a title (H1); Heading 3 should always follow a heading 2; Heading 4 should always follow a Heading 3; and Paragraphs (or other text blocks) should follow headings.

Adding titles

The title that displays in the Book Builder is determined by the use of the Display Style “Title (H1).” When drafting or editing content in Editoria, enter the title at the top of the content, select the title text, and click on the Display Style “Title (H1)” from the panel on the left side of the screen. If you are importing content using a Word file, use the Styles to apply the title tag to the appropriate title text before importing. Note that titles for content from imported files that contain a title tag will automatically update once that content is edited in Editoria.

Custom blocks

Custom blocks are added via the lower-left panel. To apply a custom block, highlight a piece of text, and choose the relevant block tag. You can add and name additional custom blocks, but applying these to content will only have an effect on the export of your content if the template you export with has corresponding styles or operations using them.

Keyboard shortcuts

There are a number of keyboard shortcuts mapped to different editing functions. When editing, click on “short cuts” in the lower right to see the current list.

Counter information

As you edit or create content, Editoria will keep track of a number of counts, including words, characters, characters without spaces, paragraphs, images, tables, and footnotes. When editing, click on the word count in the lower right to see the full list. Note that these counts are for the component, part, or chapter you are currently editing.
